In 1994, the city of St. Petersburg began breeding program to create variations of hairless cats on the basis of Oriental and Siamese cats of the modern type. In 1996, the breed “Petersburg sfinkc” (Peterbald) was certified Feline Breeding Federation. In 1997, the breed recognized The International Cat Association (TICA), and in 2003 the breed was recognized in the World Cat Federation (WCF).
